he puma is native to our continent, inhabiting a wide range of ecosystems from Patagonia to Canada and boasting the widest distribution of any mammal in the Americas. This stealthy animal purrs like a domestic cat and shares territory with other large mammals, such as the jaguar.

Thanks to the use of camera traps along the Coto and Chorongo trails at Sani Lodge, Puma presence was recorded a few months ago. On 16 April, a group of birdwatchers was observing the local avian life from the bar area when they were surprised to see the feline heading in the direction of the forest, crossing the lagoon, which had a low water level. This sighting is crucial for the community as it enables us to maintain our environmental conservation efforts to ensure the survival of this large predator by ensuring a sufficient food source.

The scientific name of this species is Puma concolor, a name which derives from the Quechua word for powerful and concolor, meaning “of a single colour” in Latin, in contrast to other cats, such as the jaguar and the ocelot, that also have dark spots on their coats. The animal is also known as the American lion, mountain lion, or cougar in English.
