David B2025-04-06Verified All the comforts of home in the Amazon Rainforest! Sani Lodge was an amazing experience. Our only regret as birders was that we didn't schedule more time. Four nights was not enough for us. The entire complex is set up for maximum comfort and access in a remote, wilderness setting where we were able to have authentic rainforest experiences everyday. We were also able to get a little exposure to the culture of the indigenous people who operate the lodge and protect 76,000 acres of natural habitats during our visit to the nearby Sani Warmi Women's Coop. Using the lodge provided guide, Eddy Gualinga, and touring at relaxed pace, we saw 135 species of birds, as well as river otters, aguti, many varieties of monkey, snakes, trees, plants, and the fabulous parrot/macaw clay licks, all explained in English in a thorough and professional way by Eddy who is himself a member of the Sani Community. We loved the service model that began with Eddy meeting us at the airport in Coca and staying with us through all five days until he delivered us back to our transportation for our next destination in Coca. He ate every meal with us (though I'm sure we could have asked for privacy if we had wanted it), which gave us more time to ask questions and plan each day with his guidance. We felt like we made a new friend in Eddy, and we could see that other guides were giving the same warm and personal service at other tables with other groups. We also had a boatman assigned to us everyday to assist Eddy, and there was a crew of charming waitresses and maids taking care of every need we could imagine. The meals were excellent and abundant. The cabin was large, clean and comfortable. The screens eliminated insects on the inside, but there was also mosquito netting over the bed. Of course, there was no air conditioning at an off-the-grid lodge, but there was a fan and it got very cool at night. Hot water and electricity was always available and drinking water was provided in refilling stations at various spots. Each cabin was situated for maximum privacy and wildlife viewing. If we had stayed longer, we would have had some relaxing porch time using the very fast WiFi and looking out into the forest. We will be going back in the future and bringing friends and family who will enjoy the adventure. P.S. - I almost forgot to mention that Sani Lodge has the best canopy tower I have ever experienced, and we have been on many throughout the Amazon and other tropical forests. It connects to a "tree house platform" in the canopy of a kapok tree more than 100 feet up in the tree. Oh, and another thing, they issue you a pair of rubber boots on the day you arrive so you never get wet feet no matter how adventurous you get. Cheryl B2025-03-07Verified Top notch We did the four day three night package, which gives you two full days, one partial day and one just departure day. The experience was seamless from being met at the Quito airport then being met at the coca airport, escorted on a bus to a boat for several hours, then a short hike to a paddle canoe. The cabins are spacious and equipped with a wall of screens, a mosquito netted bed and a fan. The entire property is something out of a fairytale with mahogany cabins and meeting areas connected by raised platforms. It’s out in the middle of nowhere and you hear nothing but the Amazon. they let you know right off the bat that all of the food and drink are prepared with sensitive tummies in mind and indeed I drank everything and ate all the raw stuff and never had any problems. There’s plenty of food and choices and I even had a number of restrictions and still had plenty of choices. you’re put into small groups and assigned in English speaking guide and have a slate of activities all day long mostly involving hikes and canoe rides. Activities go on rain or shine but they provide rubber boots and ponchos. I got a few mosquito bites, but they were nothing like I thought they might be. I don’t know if we had rough luck, but be prepared that you’re going looking for these animals. They’re not all over the place. We saw four kinds of monkeys, a number of birds, including toucans, parrots, and macaws, but often at a distance. we did see tons of amphibians bats bugs and fungi. we tried the clay lick twice, but it didn’t have parrots either time. also be prepared for early mornings. Ours always started at six or even 5 AM. Karina C2025-03-05Verified Outstanding experience! Our time at Sani Lodge was incredible! Everything was just spectacular, from the agents at the airport to the drivers on the boats and canoes, the attention from the staff was wonderful. The lodge was very comfortable with lovely beds and clean modern bathrooms. The food was delicious and the staff was all friendly and warm and professional. The nature guides were so knowledgable and their observation deck is spectacular. It is only worth mentioning that there is no A/C, so nights can be a bit warm, but there are strong fans in the rooms. Okkie172025-03-01Verified Wow, wow, wow! An amazing experience! From meeting the representative air Quito airport, to being dropped at Coca airport 4 days later, everything was excellently organised. After a short flight and a taxi trip, you board the motorised canoe for a pleasant 2 hour journey up river. A short hike - complete with monkeys - then a paddle canoe trip and you arrive at the lodge where you are greeted by "Mama Lucy" and a cold drink. Your bags are taken from the port direct to your rooms, so no carting them along the trail. The lodge exceeded all expectations. Well appointed cabanas, comfy beds with mosquito netting. Outdoor and indoor seating areas and a generous bathroom. Meals are provided, and the food is delicious and plentiful. There is also a bar area where you can purchase all manner of refreshments, and this area has a stunning view of the lagoon and the sunset. Our guides were Edwin and Wilson. Both were very knowledgeable and generous with their time. They ensured we got the most out of all the included excursions. It was rainy season whilst we were there, but we were not disappointment with the amount of wildlife we saw. Amongst our favourites were the sloth, armadillo, baby caiman and tarantula. Zofia Z2025-01-25Verified Sani lodge is amazing! Don’t skip a stay in Sani lodge. It's not cheap, but worth it! I don’t want to sound overly enthusiastic, but I really am. First of all, this place is community-owned by Kichwa people, and you can feel how the staff is making this extra effort to make it a nice and comfortable place. Snacks were served all the time, a bat in our cabins that got taken care of really quickly, a barman that brought us chicha (traditional local drink, look it up ???? ) from home upon request, a very competent english-speaking nature guide spotting things you would not even have noticed. The manager was willing to share stories about the place and how it got built up as an alternative to oil industry in the rain forest. You go on trips (walking and canoe) with a local guide and an English-speaking guide, with a slow walking pace to not scare the animals, but the heat make the walks a bit demanding. We were even lucky to see a tapir one early morning! Mother nature decides what you get to see on that day, but it helps to stay quiet and have good binoculars to have a better look at birds, monkeys ect. (you can’t buy are get any at the place). In short: super kind people, very clean cabins, delicious food and fancy bar, everything well-organized and on time and of course the nature that you don’t find anywhere else! JDolanHokie882024-12-18Verified FANTASTIC Our stay was incredible. Our guides Omar and Henri were AMAZING! Their knowledge and pride of the area was very obvious and they made sure our experience was wonderful. Staff and food at the lodge was top notch. Rooms were great and I grew to appreciate the lack of a TV haha! Highly recommend if you want a very active experience - this is not a lounging around excursion but you do get some down time. Appreciate how proud these indigenous people are of their land and heritage! Roam628701407632024-12-16Verified An beautiful EcoLodge in the Amazon Rainforest Sani Lodge is incredible ecolodge and provides an authentic rainforest experience. It is in the heart of the Amazon off the Napo River. It is run by an indigenous community. It was important to us to support this community. The setting is incredible and there is ready access to explore the rain forest by foot and by canoe and paddled by your guides. Our guide Raul knew we were focused on nature and wildlife viewing. We were not disappointed. We saw many tropical birds, five kinds of monkeys, learned a great deal about things used by the indigenous community for medicinal purposes, food, etc. It is a remote location, which we loved. To get there you get an experience to ride a motorized canoe from Coca to the lodge. It was well worth the journey. Greg L2024-12-16Verified Beyond my expectations!! Sani Lodge exceeded every one of my expectations. The friendliness and service from the staff is nothing short of luxury. This place has an excellent mixture of adventure and luxury and I would recommend them to anyone seeking a “bucket list” vacation. poornimaajayan2024-12-09Verified An absolute outstanding place to spend a few days One of the most incredible places I have stayed at. Every member of the staff was attentive and the attention to detail in every aspect of service was greatly appreciated. The location is breathtaking and all the activities were top notch. All the guides were so good and we really liked all the meals that were served to us. It was fresh and well made. The staff were so kind as to even bake a birthday cake for one of us when it was her birthday. The staff worked so hard. Every day the rooms were cleaned and turn down service was offered. I really loved the fact that it was so safe that we didn't have to lock our rooms when we left for the day. One of the most spectacular places I have stayed at with incredible staff.
